THERMAL PLANTS AND COGENERATION POWER STATIONS
First of all, what is cogeneration?
Cogeneration is the simultaneous production of heat (steam or hot water) and mechanical energy
(transformed in electricity) from the same equipment. The main energy used to feed the power plant
may be fossil (gas, petroleum or coal) which brings about the emission of gases responsible for the
greenhouse effect; gases also dangerous and polluting. This main energy can also come from biomass,
therefore eliminating the harmful effect on the environmental plan (all the studies prove it). For
that, the sustainable development and the Kyoto efforts are at stake.
The combustion of biomass
The first objective of using biomass as a combustible is to create heat. A sufficient amount of air
is supplied to the system to allow the complete oxidation of biomass into gas to create the exothermal
reactions required to produce heat. Biomass, in truth, does not burn; it is the products of it's degradation
that are considered combustibles. Biomass is pulverized by combustion. Considering this, BFI's combustion
system using a fluidized bed is a high performance choice.
The combustion gases are used in the boiler to produce thermal or mechanical energy with the help of
a steam operated turbine. The heat output is the main form of energy having value created by biomass
on a worldwide level.
BFI thermal or cogeneration power station?
Cogeneration allows the increase in energetic output of a thermal power station. For the decision makers
of the industry, the choice to switch to cogeneration will be made upon purely economical criteria's:
- The difference in the investment and exploitation costs of the 2 options;
- The return on investment under 3 years;
- Along with the aspects newly related to the environmental realities : the emission of pollution and greenhouse
effect gases as well as the management of wastes.
Simultaneous needs in electricity and heat, in a certain zone, makes the use of cogeneration particularly
interesting and gives a global output notably higher then the production of electricity and heat separately.
